Benjaminُ Alire Sáenz (born August 16, 1954) is an award-winning American poet, novelist, and author of children’s books. Born in Old Picacho, New Mexico, and raised on a small farm near Mesilla, Sáenz studied humanities, philosophy, and theology before leaving the priesthood. He earned an M.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Texas at El Paso, followed by a Wallace E. Stegner fellowship at Stanford University. His first novel, Carry Me Like Water, combined the Victorian novel with Latin American magic realism, earning critical acclaim. Sáenz has continued to teach, write, and publish works celebrated for their emotional depth, cultural insight, and lyrical prose.
