Roy Peter Clark is widely recognized as one of America’s most influential writing teachers and coaches. With a Ph.D. in medieval literature, he has shaped generations of journalists, including Pulitzer Prize winners like Thomas French and Diana Sugg. Clark has worked at The Poynter Institute since 1979 in roles such as director of the writing center, dean of the faculty, senior scholar, and vice president.

He has authored or edited 14 books on journalism and writing, including “Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer” and “America’s Best Newspaper Writing.” Born in 1948 on New York City’s Lower East Side and raised on Long Island, Clark earned his undergraduate degree from Providence College and his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
