L. J. Smith was born in Villa Park, California, and developed a passion for writing early in life. She earned a degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, followed by teaching credentials in education and special education from San Francisco State University.

Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as a kindergarten and special education teacher. She is best known for creating iconic young adult fantasy series including The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle, The Forbidden Game, and Night World. Her works have been widely adapted and reissued, gaining renewed popularity through television and global readership.

Smith passed away on March 8th, 2025, after a long illness, leaving behind a lasting legacy in young adult fantasy literature.
