The Vegetarian

The Vegetarian A Dark Psychological Journey Into Freedom, Obsession, and Human Fragility

The Vegetarian by Nobel Prize–winning author Han Kang is a haunting and deeply symbolic novel that explores identity, control, and the boundaries of the human mind. The story follows Yeong-hye, a quiet woman whose decision to stop eating meat—triggered by disturbing dreams—becomes the catalyst for emotional, psychological, and physical unraveling.

What begins as a simple personal choice quickly disrupts her marriage and family life, exposing the violence hidden beneath ordinary domestic existence. As those around her attempt to control, correct, and “restore” her, Yeong-hye resists more intensely, turning her refusal into an act of silent rebellion. The novel gradually shifts from psychological realism into a surreal, almost Kafkaesque descent, where body and mind, autonomy and control, begin to blur.

The story follows Yeong-hye, a quiet woman whose decision to stop eating meat—triggered by disturbing dreams—becomes the catalyst for emotional, psychological, and physical unraveling.
