Too Much Information, Understanding What You Don’t Want to Know

Too Much Information: Understanding What You Don’t Want to Know

In Too Much Information, Cass R. Sunstein explores a modern dilemma: when does information help us, and when does it overwhelm or even harm us? From calorie counts on oversized movie-theater popcorn to genetic testing that reveals predispositions to serious illnesses, Sunstein examines how access to information shapes decision-making, emotions, and public policy.

Rather than defending a broad “right to know” in all circumstances, Sunstein argues that disclosure requirements should be guided by practical outcomes. Governments, he suggests, should mandate transparency from corporations, employers, and institutions only when the information meaningfully improves people’s welfare. Drawing on behavioral economics and legal theory, the book analyzes how individuals process risk, respond to warnings, and sometimes avoid information that may cause anxiety or regret.

Too Much Information: Understanding What You Don’t Want to Know

:Book Summary

Through clear reasoning and real-world examples, Sunstein challenges readers to reconsider the assumption that more information is always better, offering a nuanced framework for evaluating transparency in both private and public life.
