the iliad homer

EGP135

The Iliad is an ancient Greek epic poem written by the poet Homer in the 8th century BCE. It tells the story of the Trojan War, a conflict between the city of Troy and the Greek states.

The main character of the poem is Achilles, a Greek hero who fights for the Greeks. The story begins with the quarrel between Achilles and Agamemnon, the leader of the Greek army, over a captured girl named Briseis. As a result of this disagreement, Achilles withdraws from the war and refuses to fight.

Despite his absence, the Greek army is able to gain the upper hand in the war, thanks to the bravery of other heroes such as Ajax and Diomedes. However, things take a turn for the worse when Hector, the Trojan prince, kills Patroclus, a close friend of Achilles. This prompts Achilles to return to the battlefield, filled with a desire for revenge.

Achilles confronts Hector in single combat and ultimately kills him, fulfilling his desire for revenge. However, he is unable to prevent the fall of Troy, which ultimately falls to the Greeks due to the clever strategy of Odysseus, who tricked the Trojans into accepting a wooden horse filled with Greek soldiers into their city.

The Iliad is a deeply tragic story, as it shows the devastating effects of war on both the individual and the collective. It also explores themes of honor, pride, and the human condition. Despite its age, the Iliad remains a popular and enduring work of literature that continues to be widely read and studied today.
